Naja, Hawking selbst sah das wohl nicht ganz so, er bemühte schon "Paare virtueller Teilchen" zur Erklärung in seiner berühmten Arbeit zu der nach ihm benannten Strahlung (Hervorhebung von mir):

PS. Ich denke, das Konzept virtueller Teilchen scheint auch außerhalb störungs-theoretischer Ansätze Sinn zu machen.
Ich denke z.B. an den Casimir-Effekt.
